AVALON COMPANY · PRACTICAL GUIDE

Evidence trail: Microsoft Support — Import data from data sources (Power Query) · Microsoft Learn — Power Query PDF connector · PDF24 — PDF to Excel converter
You have a bank statement, a supplier price list or a quarterly report as a PDF, and the numbers need to be in a spreadsheet by end of day. Copy-pasting turns every row into one long cell, and many "free" converters ask for an email address or a card first. Here is the short route.
> ⚡ **Quick Solution:** Need to turn a PDF table into an Excel sheet right now? Use the free **Avalon PDF to Excel** — it runs 100% locally in your browser memory with zero server uploads, no watermarks, and no sign-up.
Steps
1. **Check that the PDF has real text.** Click and drag over a number in your PDF viewer. If you can highlight it, the table is text and will convert cleanly. If the whole page highlights as one block, it is a scan, so run it through OCR first (Avalon Image to Text can read a page image).
2. **Trim to the pages you need.** A 100-page report converts faster and more cleanly if you first pull out only the table pages with Avalon Extract PDF Pages. Stray cover pages and footers are the usual cause of junk columns.
3. **Open Avalon PDF to Excel and drop in the file.** The file is read inside your browser tab, so nothing is sent anywhere.
4. **Convert and download the workbook.** Open it in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.
5. **Run a quick sanity check.** Compare one total in the spreadsheet against the PDF. Check that numbers are right-aligned, since left-aligned numbers are stored as text and `SUM` will ignore them. Look for tables that span pages: the header row may repeat mid-sheet and can be deleted.
6. **Fix the leftovers.** Merged header cells and wrapped descriptions are the most common problems. Unmerge the headers and widen the columns before you sort or filter.
Why Most Free Tools Are a Trap
Financial PDFs are exactly the files you should not hand to a stranger's server. In a Medium roundup, "I Tested 15 'Free' PDF to Excel Converters. Only One Didn't Try to Scam Me," the author lists the common patterns: an email address in exchange for the file, uploads kept on servers, and requests for a phone number or social login.
Even the better services describe retention windows. PDF24 says files are stored "only as long as necessary," and PDFtoExcel.com says uploads are deleted "promptly after conversion." That is better than nothing, but your statement still left your machine.

The other usual traps are a watermark on the export unless you pay, and a "first 3 pages free" cap that shows up only after the upload finishes. A tool that processes the file in the browser has no upload step to monitor, store or paywall. Your file stays on your device the whole time.
Alternatives
- **Excel's built-in PDF import.** Microsoft's support page "Import data from data sources (Power Query)" describes Data > Get Data > From File > From PDF, which lists the tables it finds in a Navigator window. It also keeps a refreshable connection, which is great if the same report arrives monthly. The catch is that it needs a recent Excel for desktop, and Microsoft's "Power Query PDF connector" documentation notes PDF isn't supported in Power BI Premium. It will not help if you work in Google Sheets or on a phone.
- **Copy-paste through Word.** Open the PDF in Word and paste the table into Excel. It costs nothing, but Word often reflows layout and splits numbers across cells, so it only suits small, simple tables.
- **Adobe Acrobat export.** It is accurate on messy layouts, but it requires a paid subscription.
Use Excel's importer for recurring reports. Use the browser tool for a one-off file, or when you are on a machine without desktop Excel.

Under the Hood: What We Learned
Running conversion in the browser changes what you design for. Memory, not network speed, becomes the limit, because the whole file lives in the tab. Large PDFs need to be processed page by page, and a failure has to give a clear message instead of a frozen tab. That is also why the "extract only the pages you need" step above helps.
Smaller input is faster and also gives cleaner column detection.
Table detection works best when a PDF is made from real text and ruled lines. The same document exported from a spreadsheet converts far better than one printed from a photo.
One Last Thought
What we keep relearning from running free tools is that people judge them by what they refuse to ask for. A tool that never needs your file, your email or your card earns trust, and that matters more than any feature on the page.

Notes for the operator: I used `tavily_search` (two queries) for the sources above. I did not run any Avalon tool while writing this, so the draft has no "used our own tool" sentence. The claims about the tool's behaviour (local processing, no watermark, no sign-up) come from the brief, and I did not test the tool's accuracy on specific PDFs. The draft is about 640 words.

**proposed_actions**
– Before publishing, convert one real text-based PDF table with PDF to Excel and add the measured processing time and file size to the "Under the Hood" section.
– Check that the PDF to Excel page says plainly how it handles scanned PDFs, so the OCR advice in step 1 matches the tool.
– Give this article a follow-up that covers the "extract pages, then convert" two-tool flow, which fits Track 5.
