It is now easy to add one more feature, one more automation, one more template, or one more promise. That makes the product feel bigger while often making the buying decision harder.

A useful signal appeared this week in Hacker News in the discussion “Ask HN: How do you manage skills files?” The strongest practical comments were not about collecting as many reusable AI skills as possible.
<details data-avalon-company-card-details="1" style="margin-top:14px;padding-top:12px;border-top:1px solid #d9e4f0;color:#334e68">
Read the full operating note

They were about creating a small set around work that is frequent, repeatable, and personally useful, then checking whether those skills still perform the intended job. The lesson for a digital product founder is broader than skills: repeated pain is a better starting point than feature abundance.

The same idea shows up in a September 7 Indie Hackers teardown, “Appaca is Retool, Zapier, and Notion at once, which means it is none of them. The founder already wrote the fix.” Its central criticism is that a page trying to sell many jobs at once can lose the point of view that makes a buyer care.

The suggested remedy is to choose one operator, one painful job, and one clear outcome.

For a solo founder, that is not merely a branding preference. It is an operating constraint. Time is scarce. Every extra audience, promise, and use case multiplies the amount of copy, support, proof, and product design that must stay coherent.

</details>

Decision

Our decision is to treat “one recurring job” as the smallest useful unit for an AI-assisted digital product.

Before adding another feature, ask a harder question: what is the one task a buyer repeats often enough that they would gladly pay to make it easier, faster, or more reliable?
<details data-avalon-company-card-details="1" style="margin-top:14px;padding-top:12px;border-top:1px solid #d9e4f0;color:#334e68">
Read the full operating note

That task should be specific enough to describe in one sentence. A weak promise says, “Use AI to run your business.” A stronger promise says, “Turn a weekly customer-call transcript into a publish-ready insight note with a fixed review checklist.” The second sentence defines a user, an input, an output, and a quality bar.

This narrowing also improves the sales path. Gumroad’s “Gumroad’s fees” page says direct-link sales are charged 10% plus $0.50, with payment processing listed separately, while sales found through its Discover marketplace carry a 30% fee that includes processing. That does not prove direct traffic will sell better.

It does show that earning your own audience can matter economically as well as strategically.

</details>

Action

Here is the operating note we are using.

First, list the repeated jobs we already perform with AI. Do not rank them by novelty. Rank them by frequency, frustration, and how clearly success can be checked.
<details data-avalon-company-card-details="1" style="margin-top:14px;padding-top:12px;border-top:1px solid #d9e4f0;color:#334e68">
Read the full operating note

Second, choose one job and write four lines:

1. The problem: what keeps happening?
2. The method: what sequence reliably handles it?
3. The failure test: what would make the output unacceptable?
4. The proof: what can a buyer inspect before paying?

Third, turn those four lines into a free public note. The free note should teach the method well enough to be useful on its own. The paid product can then offer the reusable assets that make the method easier to apply: templates, examples, checklists, decision tables, or a deeper guide.

Fourth, make pricing a separate decision from scope. Amazon KDP’s “eBook List Price Requirements” says that, effective July 7, 2026, the U.S. price band for its 70% royalty option expanded from $2.99–$9.99 to $2.99–$12.99.

That creates more room for a specialized eBook to test a higher list price while remaining inside that royalty band, subject to the platform’s other eligibility rules. It does not mean $12.99 is automatically the right price.

</details>

Result

The immediate result is clarity, not revenue.

We have not published a new product from this note, changed a live price, or measured a conversion lift. Any claim about sales improvement would be invented. What we do have is a sharper decision rule: if a product needs ten use cases to sound valuable, we have probably not defined the buyer’s repeated job tightly enough.

The current public evidence supports the direction, not the outcome. Hacker News shows active practitioner interest in reusable AI methods tied to repeated work. Indie Hackers offers a recent case for narrow positioning. Gumroad and KDP provide current platform economics that make audience ownership and pricing discipline worth examining.

Next action

Our next move is to select one repeated AI-assisted job from our own work and produce a one-page public guide around it. Then we will draft the paid companion around the same job, compare two price points on paper, and define the measurement we would need before calling the offer successful.

The operating lesson we keep relearning is simple: AI makes expansion cheap, but coherence is still expensive. The advantage is not having the most things a product can do. It is knowing which repeated job deserves to become the product.

Sources

Hacker News — Ask HN: How do you manage skills files?

Indie Hackers — Appaca is Retool, Zapier, and Notion at once, which means it is none of them.
