How to check character limits for Instagram and X
Type or paste your text directly into the word counter, or open a supported document such as a .docx, .txt, or .srt file.
Check your live counts at the top. The tool updates characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, and paragraphs as you type.
Look at the progress bars for Instagram and X. The bars turn amber when you get near a limit and turn red when you go over, showing how many characters to cut.
The X bar automatically applies X platform rules: every link counts as 23 characters, and most emoji and Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters count as 2 characters.
How we tested the counter
We tested the free tier on 2026-11-05 using Chromium on desktop.
The evaluation covered 7 total test cases spanning normal usage, edge cases, and tier limits.
We tested single documents, multiple languages, subtitle files, zero-byte files, invalid formats, and multi-file uploads.
All 7 test cases passed.
Results on edge cases and invalid files
We tested Word and plain text files containing Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Thai, and Russian text. Both processed without issue, displaying "Counting docx_multilang.docx." and "Counting txt_multilang.txt."
We loaded a .srt subtitle file, which the tool read with the confirmation message "Counting srt_basic.srt."
When we uploaded an empty 0-byte Word file, the tool rejected it with the message: "docx_zero.docx could not be read. Save it as .docx or .txt and try again."
When we submitted a PNG image file renamed to look like a Word document, the tool also rejected it with: "docx_fake.docx could not be read. Save it as .docx or .txt and try again."
Limits of the free version and when to avoid it
The free tier opens only one document at a time. When we tried uploading 2 files at once, the tool showed "One document at a time: the first one was opened." and only loaded the first file.
This tool is not the right choice if you need to process multiple documents in a single batch.
Files that are empty, corrupted, or use false extensions will not open. You must provide a valid .docx or .txt file.
We re-run these tests when the tool changes. Results describe this tool on the date shown.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. Why does the X bar show a different number from Characters?
X counts some things differently: every link counts as 23 characters however long it is, and most emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as 2. The X bar follows those rules, so it matches what X shows when you post.
Q. Is my text sent or saved anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser on your own device. Your text is not uploaded, and it is not kept after you close the page.
Q. How does the tool show when text is too long for Instagram or X?
The indicator bars turn amber when you get near a limit and red when you go over, showing the exact number of characters to cut.
