How to add auto subtitles to a video for free

Open the Free Auto Subtitle Generator at https://avaloncompany.ai/tools/subtitle-maker/. There is no sign-up and no watermark on the video.

Step 1: Drop your video into the page. Step 2: Press Make subtitles. Step 3: Read the lines and check them. Step 4: Pick a font, size, color, background box and position while you watch the preview.

Step 5: Choose how to save. Press Burn subtitles into the video to get an MP4 with the captions drawn on it. Or download an SRT or VTT file to upload to YouTube.

Leave the language on Detect automatically, or pick it yourself. If you already have a subtitle file, press Use my own SRT or VTT, edit it if needed, choose a style and burn it into the video.

The first time you use it, your browser downloads the speech model once. It is about 47 MB for Fast or 77 MB for Accurate. On a recent laptop, a minute of video takes about 5 seconds with Fast and about 15 seconds with Accurate. Burning the subtitles in takes about 5 to 10 seconds for a one-minute 720p video. Phones and older computers take longer.

What we tested and how

We ran the tool on 2026-11-01 in desktop Chromium on the free tier. We used 7 test cases and all 7 passed.

The cases were: a typical file, English speech with the language set, a video with no sound track, a PDF renamed to look like a video, an empty 0-byte video file, a video one minute over the free length limit, and 2 files at once where one was over the free limit.

A full results table for every case is shown on this page. Here we explain what the harder cases showed.

What happened with the difficult files

The typical file worked and gave both an MP4 and text. With English speech and the language set, the tool made 3 subtitle lines and said: "3 subtitle lines ready. Check them, pick a style, then download."

A video with no sound did not fail silently. The tool said: "This video has no sound to turn into subtitles. Add lines by hand or use your own SRT or VTT file." So you still have a way forward.

A PDF renamed to look like a video and an empty 0-byte file both got the same clear message: "This video could not be read. Try saving it again as MP4."

An 11:00 video went over the free limit. The tool said: "This video is 11:00 long. The free version makes subtitles for up to 10 minutes of video."

When we added 2 files, the tool said: "The free version works on one video at a time. Press Remove on this one to start another."

Limits of the free version and when it is not the right choice

The free version works on one video at a time. It makes subtitles for videos up to 10 minutes. Burned-in subtitles have their own, shorter length limit that covers Shorts, Reels and TikTok. Free also has a maximum file size.

Avalon Pro is for longer videos, several videos at once, and saved subtitle styles. It also gives you one ZIP with every MP4 and SRT.

This tool is not the right fit if your video is longer than the free limit, or if you need to process many videos in one go. If your video has no speech, it cannot make lines for you. Load your own SRT or VTT file instead.

Choose burned-in subtitles when they must show everywhere and look exactly as you styled them. Choose an SRT or VTT file when viewers should be able to switch captions off, YouTube should index them, or you want to edit them later.

Everything happens on your device, in your browser, so your videos are not sent to our servers or anyone else.

We re-run these tests when the tool changes. Results describe this tool on the date shown.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Is there really no watermark?

Yes. The tool adds no watermark to the video, and you do not need to sign up.

Q. What happens if my video has no sound?

The tool tells you: "This video has no sound to turn into subtitles. Add lines by hand or use your own SRT or VTT file."

Q. How long can my video be on the free version?

The free version makes subtitles for up to 10 minutes of video. In our test, an 11:00 video was stopped with a message that said so.
