💡 Summary

Our free video compressor makes a smaller MP4 with no watermark, and the free plan does not change that. On 2026-11-01 we ran 18 test cases in desktop Chromium on the free tier, and all 18 passed. This page shows the steps, what we tested and what the tool said when a file could not be compressed.

How to compress a video for free with no watermark

Open the Free Video Compressor at https://avaloncompany.ai/tools/compress-video/. Chrome or Edge on a computer works best.

Add your video. Then pick how you want to shrink it. Balanced is the simple choice. If you need a set size, choose Exact file size and type the size in megabytes. The tool works out the bitrate from the length of the video. It aims at or just under your size, and if the first try comes out larger, it runs once more with a lower bitrate.

Leave Resolution on Automatic if you like. When the target size is too small for full HD, the tool steps down the resolution for you. Start the compression and download the MP4. The file holds only your video and sound, with no watermark, on the free plan too.

In one test on the tool page, a 30-second 1080p video of 43.5 MB came out at 21.1 MB with Balanced. With an exact 10 MB target it came out at 9.6 MB. Each took about 4 seconds in Chrome on a laptop. A smaller target gives a softer picture.

What we tested and how

We ran 18 cases on 2026-11-01 in desktop Chromium on the free tier. All 18 passed. A case passes when the tool either makes an MP4 or shows a clear message for a file it cannot or may not process.

The cases cover a typical file, several file formats and file names, videos with unusual properties, broken files, and the free limits. The full list with each result is in the table on this page.

What happened with the difficult files

Most unusual files became an MP4. A MOV video, a WebM video, a portrait (vertical) video and a video with no sound track all compressed. So did a very long file name, a name with extra spaces and an emoji, and a name with Korean and Japanese characters. The three variable-frame-rate videos also compressed, to 90.7 KB, 77.3 KB and 98.5 KB. A cut-off (truncated) video file compressed too, to 100.4 KB.

Two files could not be turned into video, and the tool said so. A PDF renamed to look like a video and an empty 0-byte file both gave this message: "This file could not be opened. It may be damaged, or use a format this browser can't read. Try Chrome or Edge, or another copy of the video."

The limit cases also gave clear messages. For a file 1 MB over the size limit: "This video is larger than 500 MB, the free limit. Avalon Pro compresses videos up to 1,000 MB." For a video 1 minute over the length limit: "This video is longer than 5 minutes, the free limit. Avalon Pro compresses videos up to 1 hour long." For two files at once: "The free version compresses one video at a time. Compress this one, press Clear, then add the next." A video of exactly 5 minutes was accepted and showed "1 video ready".

Limits of the free version and when to choose something else

The free version compresses one video at a time, up to 500 MB and 5 minutes long. Avalon Pro takes videos up to 1,000 MB and 1 hour long, several at once. It also adds one-tap sizes for Discord, Gmail and websites, a ZIP download, saved presets and your own file names.

This tool is not the right fit if your video is longer than 5 minutes or larger than 500 MB and you stay on the free plan. It is also not right if you need to compress several videos in one go.

Browser support matters too. The tool uses the H.264 and AAC encoders built into your browser. Safari and Firefox can lack one of them for some files, and the tool then tells you so. If that happens, try Chrome or Edge.

We re-run these tests when the tool changes. Results describe this tool on the date shown.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Does the free plan add a watermark to the compressed video?

No. The MP4 contains only your video and sound, on the free plan too.

Q. Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The video is compressed inside your browser with its built-in video encoder, and the MP4 is created on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers.

Q. Can I compress a video to an exact size like 10 MB?

Yes. Choose Exact file size and type the size in megabytes. The tool lands at or just under that size. In our test, a 10 MB target produced a 9.6 MB file from a 43.5 MB video.
