Free Video Compressor: Smaller MP4, No Watermark

Last updated By Avalon

Make a video file smaller for email, Discord or your website: pick half the size or an exact size in MB and get an MP4 with no watermark.

Size for sharing:

Your videos never leave your device. They are compressed in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server, and the result has no watermark.

    What this tool does

To compress a video for free, drop it above, keep Balanced and press Compress video: you get an MP4 about half the size, with no sign-up and no watermark. It re-encodes the video with H.264 and AAC, the formats every phone, computer and website plays, at a bitrate worked out from the size you want. Pick Strong for an even smaller file, or Exact file size to hit a number of megabytes, for example to fit an email attachment.

    How to use it

    1. Drop your video into the box above, or click it to choose it.
    2. Choose how much to compress: Balanced, Strong, Light or an Exact file size in MB.
    3. Leave Resolution on Automatic, or pick 720p for a small file that still looks sharp on phones.
    4. Press Compress video and wait for the progress bar.
    5. Check the new size next to the file name, then press Download.

    Which setting to pick

Discord's own help page says the upload limit without Nitro is 20 MB, and Gmail's says attachments can be up to 25 MB. Email encodes attachments on the way, which makes them about a third bigger, so 18 MB is a safe size for Gmail.

    Tips

    • Compressing takes about as long as the video plays, or less on a recent computer.
    • A 4K phone video compressed at 1080p is usually much smaller and still looks sharp on most screens.
    • Only need part of the video? Cut it first with the video trimmer: a shorter video can keep more quality at the same size.
    • Need an MP4 without changing the quality? Use the MOV to MP4 converter instead.
    • Please only compress videos you made yourself or have permission to use.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the compressed video have a watermark?

No. The MP4 contains only your video and sound, on the free plan too.

Can I compress a video to an exact size, like 10 MB?

Yes. Choose Exact file size and type the size in megabytes. The tool works out the bitrate from the length of the video and lands at or just under that size. If the first try comes out larger, it runs once more with a lower bitrate.

    Are my videos uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is compressed inside your browser with its built-in video encoder, and the MP4 is created on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers.

How much smaller can a video get?

As small as you choose: the tool aims at the size you pick. In our test, a 30-second 1080p video of 43.5 MB came out at 21.1 MB with Balanced and at 9.6 MB with an exact 10 MB target, each in about 4 seconds in Chrome on a laptop. The smaller the target, the softer the picture gets, so with Resolution on Automatic the tool also steps down from full HD when the size is too small for it.

    Which browsers work?

Chrome and Edge on a computer work best. The tool uses the H.264 and AAC encoders built into your browser; Safari and Firefox can lack one of them for some files, and the tool then tells you so.

    What are the limits?

The free version compresses one video at a time, up to 500 MB and 5 minutes long. Avalon Pro takes videos up to 1,000 MB and 1 hour long, up to 20 at once, and adds one-tap sizes for Discord, Gmail and websites, a ZIP download, saved presets and your own file names.
