Free PDF to Word Converter: No Sign-Up, No Watermark

Last updated By Avalon

Turn a PDF into an editable Word file (.docx) for free.

Free, no sign-up and no watermark. Conversion runs in your browser, so it starts right away, even on a phone.

      What this tool does

It turns a PDF into a Word document (.docx) that you can edit in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.

The converter reads where each piece of text sits on the page and rebuilds the document from it:

      • Paragraphs are joined back together, so you can edit text without broken lines.
      • Headings are found from the larger text and get real heading styles, so the navigation pane works.
      • Bold and italic text stays bold and italic.
      • Bullet and numbered lists become real Word lists.
      • Tables with clear gaps between columns become Word tables.
      • Pictures are placed where they were on the page.
      • Running headers, footers and page numbers that repeat on every page are left out, so they do not end up in the middle of your text.

      How to use it

      1. Drop a PDF into the box above, or click it to choose one.
      2. Press Convert to Word.
      3. Press Download .docx and open the file in your word processor.

      Tips for the best result

      • Simple documents convert best. Reports, letters, contracts and articles come out cleanly; designed brochures and forms may need tidying.
      • Turn off "Start each PDF page on a new page" if you want the text to flow freely, for example to reuse it in another document.
      • Scanned document? If the text cannot be selected in your PDF reader, it is a scan. The free version keeps it as pictures; for editable text, try our free image to text tool or Avalon Pro.
      • Need to remove pages first? Use the free organize PDF tool, then convert only the pages you need.
      • Going the other way? Use the free Word to PDF converter.

      Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF to Word converter really free?

Yes. Convert as many PDFs as you like, one at a time, up to 50 pages each. There is no sign-up, no email and no watermark on the Word file.

Will the Word file look exactly like my PDF?

Simple documents convert best: letters, reports, articles and contracts come out as real paragraphs with headings, bold and italic text, bullet and numbered lists and pictures. A PDF does not store paragraphs or tables, only text placed on a page, so the converter rebuilds them. Complex layouts such as magazines, forms with boxes, text over pictures, footnotes and tables without clear gaps between columns may need some tidying in Word. Fonts are matched to similar common fonts.

      What about tables?

Tables with clear gaps between columns, such as price lists and statements, become real Word tables. Tables whose cells run together, or that span several pages, may come out as plain text lines. For tables you want in a spreadsheet, use the free PDF to Excel converter instead.

Does it work with two-column documents?

Yes, for typical two-column articles and papers: the left column is read first, then the right one, and full-width titles stay in place. Pages with three or more columns, or columns of very different widths, may come out in the wrong order.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

A scanned page is a picture of text, so there is no text to copy. This tool reads scanned pages with OCR and turns them into editable text, for free. If you turn that option off, each scanned page goes into the Word file as a picture. Clear, straight scans of printed text work well; handwriting and blurry photos do not.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Choose the PDF from your files, convert it, and open the Word file in Word, Google Docs or Pages. Long documents take longer on a phone than on a computer.

      Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the PDF is not sent to a server.

Can I convert a locked PDF?

Not directly. Unlock it in your PDF reader, save an unlocked copy, and convert that copy.
