Free MP4 to MP3 Converter: Extract Audio, No Sign-Up

Last updated By Avalon

Extract the audio from your MP4, MOV or WebM videos as MP3 or WAV, pick the quality and trim it.

Your files never leave your device. The audio is extracted in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server.

    What this tool does

To turn an MP4 into an MP3 for free, drop the video above, pick a quality and press convert: the audio is extracted in seconds, with no sign-up and no upload wait. It takes the soundtrack out of a video you already have and saves it as an MP3 (or an uncompressed WAV). You can pick the MP3 quality, switch to mono to halve the size, and cut out just the part you need with a start and end time. Audio files work too, so you can also use it to turn a WAV or M4A into an MP3. In our own test, a 10-minute 720p MP4 became a 14 MB, 192 kbps MP3 in about 7 seconds.

    How to use it

    1. Drop your videos or audio files into the box above, or click it to choose them.
    2. Pick MP3 or WAV under Convert to, and an MP3 quality.
    3. Optionally type a Start at and End at time to keep only part of the file.
    4. Press Extract audio. Each file shows its progress.
    5. Download each file, or press Download all.

    Tips

    • Recorded a talk or class on your phone? Extract it as 96 kbps mono to get a small file you can listen to anywhere.
    • Only need one song or one answer from a long recording? Set the start and end times and you get just that part.
    • WAV keeps every detail but is about ten times larger than MP3. Use it only when you will edit the sound further.
    • Please only convert videos you made yourself or have permission to use.

MP3 encoding uses LAME through the lamejs port, which is licensed under the LGPL. The encoder runs as a separate file inside your browser.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to MP3 without losing quality?

Pick 320 kbps for the highest MP3 quality, or WAV if you need an uncompressed file for editing. A higher bitrate than the original soundtrack does not add quality, so 192 kbps is enough for most music.

Can I extract audio from a video on my phone?

Yes, if your phone's browser can play the video. Open this page, tap the box to choose the video from your files or gallery, and download the MP3.

    Are my videos uploaded anywhere?

No. The audio is extracted inside your browser and the MP3 is created on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers or anyone else, so it also works for private recordings.

Can I use this to download audio from YouTube or other websites?

No. This tool only works with files that are already on your device, such as videos you recorded or exported yourself. It does not download anything from the internet, and you should only convert media you own or have permission to use.

Which MP3 quality should I choose?

192 kbps is a good default for music. 128 kbps is plenty for podcasts, lectures and voice notes, and 96 kbps with Mono makes the smallest files for speech. Choose 320 kbps only when you want the highest quality and file size does not matter.

How do I cut out only part of the video?

Type a Start at and End at time before you press Extract audio, for example 1:30 and 4:05. You can use seconds (90), minutes and seconds (1:30) or hours (1:02:30). Leave both empty to keep the whole file.

Why does my file say it is too long for memory?

Your browser has to hold the whole soundtrack in memory while it works. In our tests 2.5-hour recordings worked, while some 3-hour ones were refused. Close other tabs and try again, or split the video into shorter parts first and convert each part. Trimming does not help here, because the whole file is read before the cut is made.

My MKV or WebM file shows no sound. What can I do?

Each browser opens a slightly different set of formats. Chrome, Edge and Firefox open MP4, MOV, WebM and most MKV files; Safari may not open WebM or MKV. If one browser cannot read a file, try another, or save the video as MP4 first.

    Are there limits?

Up to 10 files per batch and 200 MB per file. Recordings longer than about 2.5 hours may not fit in your browser's memory. Everything is free.
