Free Video Trimmer: Cut Video Without Losing Quality

Last updated By Avalon

Cut the start and end off your videos and save as MP4, with a lossless Fast cut or a frame-exact cut.

Your videos never leave your device. They are trimmed in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server.

    What this tool does

To trim a video without losing quality for free, drop it above, set the start and end and choose a Fast cut, which copies the video without re-encoding, with no sign-up and no watermark. It cuts the beginning and the end off a video you already have and saves the part in between as an MP4. Choose an Exact cut to start on the very frame you want, or a Fast cut that copies the video without re-encoding, so it keeps the original quality and is done in seconds. You can also make the trimmed video smaller or remove its sound in the same step.

    How to use it

    1. Drop your video into the box above, or click it to choose it.
    2. Type a Start at and End at time, for example 0:05 and 0:42. The picture in the list shows the frame at your start time.
    3. Choose Exact or Fast under Cut.
    4. Optionally choose a smaller size, a lower quality or Remove the sound.
    5. Press Trim video, then download the new MP4.

    Tips

    • Cutting a long screen recording down to the one minute that matters is the fastest way to make a file small enough to send.
    • Use the Fast cut when the start can be a second early, for example to keep a whole song or talk.
    • To turn the trimmed part into a looping animation, use video to GIF.
    • Please only edit videos you made yourself or have permission to use.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I cut a video without losing quality?

Choose the Fast cut. It copies the video as it is instead of re-encoding it, so the quality is exactly the original and the cut takes seconds. Most players start right at your chosen time; choose Exact if a player shows a few extra seconds before it.

Does the trimmed video have a watermark?

No. The MP4 contains only your video and sound, with nothing added.

    Are my videos uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is cut inside your browser and the new file is created on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers or anyone else.

Can I use this to cut videos from YouTube or other websites?

No. This tool only works with files that are already on your device, such as videos you recorded or exported yourself. It does not download anything from the internet, and you should only edit videos you own or have permission to use.

What is the difference between Exact and Fast?

Exact re-encodes the part you keep, so the new file starts on the very frame you asked for in every player. Fast copies the video without re-encoding, which keeps the exact original quality and takes seconds. A video can only be cut on a key frame, so a Fast file also carries the few seconds before your start time and tells the player to skip them. Phones, browsers and most players start exactly at your time; a few older players and editors may show those extra seconds.

How do I type the times?

Use seconds (90), minutes and seconds (1:30) or hours (1:02:30). You can add tenths, like 1:30.5. Leave Start at empty to keep the beginning and End at empty to keep the end. The small picture next to each file shows the frame at your start time.

Can I also make the video smaller?

Yes. Choose a size under Make smaller, such as 720p, and a lower quality if you like. The trimmed part is then re-encoded at that size, which can shrink a phone video a lot.

    Which browsers work?

Chrome and Edge can do every kind of cut. The Fast cut of an H.264 or HEVC video works in any modern browser that can read the file. The Exact cut and Make smaller use the H.264 and AAC encoders built into your browser; Safari and Firefox may lack one of them for some files, and the tool then tells you so. If a file fails, try Chrome or Edge.

    Are there limits?

Up to 5 files per batch and 200 MB per file, all free. The same start and end times are used for every file in the batch. Avalon Pro takes up to 100 files per batch and adds a ZIP download, saved presets and your own file names. The 200 MB limit is the same in Pro, because the new MP4 is built in your browser's memory.
