How to Crop Images to a Square Step by Step

Drop your images into the tool area. Keep the Crop to option set to Square 1:1.

Size after cropping keeps 100 percent of the pixels by default. You can type a smaller number if you need smaller output files.

Press Crop images. The tool trims the outer edges evenly from the center of each image.

How We Tested the Tool

We tested the free crop tool on 2026-11-03 using desktop Chromium.

The test suite ran 19 checks across typical photos, unusual formats, corrupted inputs, and batch boundaries.

All 19 checks passed. The tests verified file dimensions from 1 × 1 px up to 8000 × 6000 px, EXIF orientation, and batch sizes up to 30 files.

How Edge Cases and Unsupported Files Handled

The tool processed unusual image inputs without crashing. Truncated JPEGs, CMYK JPEGs, and 16-bit PNGs processed normally, while BMP and animated GIF files were converted to PNG outputs.

When given non-image files, the tool halted processing and warned the user. Both an empty 0-byte file and a disguised PDF displayed: "This file could not be read as an image. Try saving it as JPG or PNG first."

Apple HEIC files were also identified and stopped with the message: "1 file was skipped because it is not a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF image. For iPhone HEIC photos, convert them to JPG first with the image converter."

Free Tier Limits and When to Pick Another Tool

The free version processes a maximum of 30 images in one batch. When we tested 31 files, the tool stated: "Only 30 images fit in one batch, so 1 was left out. Resize these, press Clear, then add the rest."

The tool crops every picture strictly from the center. If your subject is positioned off-center, crop the photo in your phone's photo editor instead.

For exact pixel dimensions, use the free image resizer. Avalon Pro supports larger batches, ZIP downloads, saved presets, custom file names, and an optional watermark.

We re-run these tests when the tool changes. Results describe this tool on the date shown.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The images are cropped inside your browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers.

Q. Can I choose the exact area to keep?

Not in this tool. It crops every image from the center to make bulk cropping quick. For one photo where the subject is off-center, crop it in your phone's photo editor.

Q. How many images can I crop at once for free?

You can crop up to 30 images per batch for free. Avalon Pro takes larger batches and adds ZIP downloads.
