How to split a PDF step by step

Drop your PDF into the tool. You do not need to create an account.

Choose how you want to split your file. Pick 'Every page as its own PDF' to separate all pages, or type specific ranges like '1-3, 5' separated by commas. Writing '8-' extracts from page 8 to the end.

Click Split PDFs. Each range becomes its own PDF file that you can download immediately without any watermark.

How we tested the free tool

We tested the free tier on 2026-11-03 using desktop Chromium. We ran 17 test cases in total, and all 17 passed.

Our test set covered standard files, custom ranges, and edge cases. These included very long file names, file names with spaces and emoji, and file names with Korean and Japanese characters.

We also ran tests on PDFs with varied page dimensions, image-only scanned files, and documents containing text in Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Thai, and Russian.

How difficult and invalid files were handled

Complex valid files split cleanly. An image-only scanned PDF produced a 24.8 KB single page, and a document with seven different language scripts created a 41.2 KB page.

Corrupt or non-PDF inputs failed safely without crashing. When given an empty 0-byte file, a 1-byte file, a cut-off PDF, or a renamed JPEG, the tool displayed: "Nothing was split. See the message next to each file."

The tool showed that same error message for password-protected files, invalid text like 'range garbage', and page numbers outside the document range.

Free tier limits and when not to use this tool

The free tier processes one file at a time up to 150 MB. When attempting to add two files at once, the tool stated: "The free version splits one PDF at a time. Split this one, press Clear, then add the next."

When a file exceeds 150 MB, the tool blocks the upload with: "pdf_mb_151.pdf was not added: one batch can hold 150 MB in total. Merge these first, then merge the result with the rest."

This tool is not the right choice if you need to split password-protected PDFs directly, or if you need to split multiple files at once. You will also need Avalon Pro if you require page numbering on new files, ZIP downloads, saved presets, or custom output file names.

We re-run these tests when the tool changes. Results describe this tool on the date shown.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Are my files uploaded to a remote server?

No. The PDF is read and split inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to servers, so contracts and statements remain private.

Q. Does splitting reduce document quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are. Text remains sharp and searchable, and images are not recompressed.

Q. Can I split a password-protected PDF directly?

Not directly. You must unlock the PDF in your regular PDF reader, save an unlocked copy, and split that copy.
