How the paperback royalty is calculated
The formula is simple. Royalty = royalty rate ร list price โ printing cost.
The rate is 60% when the list price is at or above a threshold. On Amazon.com that threshold is $9.99. Below it, the rate is 50%.
Printing cost depends on your book. A 300-page black-ink paperback costs $1.00 + 300 ร $0.012 = $4.60 to print on Amazon.com. At $14.99 it earns 0.60 ร $14.99 โ $4.60 = $4.39.
The calculator also shows the minimum price KDP allows. That is the printing cost divided by the royalty rate. KDP will not let you set a price so low that the royalty cannot cover printing.
What the worked examples show
We entered five list prices into the live calculator. Every row uses Amazon.com, 200 pages and black ink. The printing cost is $3.40 in every row.
The royalty per copy goes from $2.59 at $9.99 to $4.39 at $12.99, $5.59 at $14.99, $8.59 at $19.99 and $11.59 at $24.99. Printing cost stays fixed, so a higher list price raises your royalty.
The $9.99 row sits right at the Amazon.com threshold. The 60% rate applies at or above $9.99, so this row uses 60%.
Page count and ink change the printing cost, so your own numbers will differ from this table.
How to use the calculator for your own numbers
Open the free KDP Royalty Calculator and choose Paperback.
Enter your list price and pick your marketplace. Then enter the page count, the ink type and the trim size.
The calculator works out the printing cost and applies the 50% or 60% rate. It shows your royalty per copy and the minimum price KDP allows for that book.
Try a few list prices to see how the royalty changes. Keep the other inputs the same so the comparison is fair.
What the calculator does not cover
The result is an estimate, not the exact amount you will be paid.
Price matching, sales to buyers outside the 70% territories, currency conversion and tax withholding can all change the final amount.
The pricing page in your KDP Bookshelf shows the exact figure for your book. Use the calculator to plan, then check it there.
The worked examples show what the calculator produced for these inputs. They are not a promise of what any book will earn.
We re-run these tests when the tool changes. Results describe this tool on the date shown.
