What this tool does
Enter your list price and marketplace above to see the royalty on one Kindle ebook or paperback sale, using KDP's rates as checked in October 2026. It estimates the royalty you earn on one sale of a book published with Amazon KDP. For ebooks it compares the 35% and 70% royalty options, applies the delivery cost per MB and checks your price against KDP's price bands. For paperbacks it works out the printing cost from page count, ink, trim size and marketplace, then applies the 50% or 60% royalty rate.
How to use it
- Choose eBook or Paperback.
- Enter your list price.
- For an ebook: choose the marketplace, enter the file size in MB and, for UK and EU sales, the VAT rate included in the price.
- For a paperback: choose the marketplace, page count, ink and paper and trim size.
- Read the royalty per sale. Warnings appear if the price is outside what KDP accepts.
eBook royalty rules
| Option | Royalty | Delivery cost | Amazon.com price band |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70% | 70% × (list price − VAT − delivery cost) | $0.15 per MB on Amazon.com | $2.99 to $12.99 |
| 35% | 35% × (list price − VAT) | None | From $0.99 (under 3 MB), up to $200 |
The 35% minimum rises with file size on Amazon.com: $0.99 under 3 MB, $1.99 from 3 to 10 MB and $2.99 at 10 MB or more. The 70% rate applies to buyers in KDP's 70% territories, which include the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most of Western Europe; other buyers earn 35%. Your ebook also has to be priced at least 20% below any print edition to stay on the 70% option.
A worked example: a €2.99 ebook of 1 MB sold on Amazon.es to a buyer in Spain, where ebook VAT is 4%. The price without VAT is €2.99 ÷ 1.04 = €2.875, the delivery cost is 1 MB × €0.12 = €0.12, so the 70% royalty is 0.70 × (€2.875 − €0.12) = €1.93. On the 35% option the same sale earns 0.35 × €2.875 = €1.01.
Paperback royalty rules
| Marketplace | 50% royalty at or below | 60% royalty at or above |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon.com | $9.98 | $9.99 |
| Amazon.co.uk | £7.98 | £7.99 |
| Amazon.de, .fr, .es, .it, .nl, .ie, .com.be | €9.98 | €9.99 |
| Amazon.ca | C$13.98 | C$13.99 |
| Amazon.com.au | A$13.98 | A$13.99 |
| Amazon.co.jp | ¥999 | ¥1,000 |
Printing cost = fixed cost + page count × per-page cost. Short black-ink books (up to 110 pages) pay only a flat cost, $2.30 for a regular trim size on Amazon.com. Longer black-ink books cost $1.00 plus $0.012 per page. Color costs much more per page: $0.0255 for standard color and $0.065 for premium color on Amazon.com, so a color book usually needs a higher list price.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a KDP paperback royalty?
Choose Paperback, then enter the list price, marketplace, page count, ink and trim size. The calculator works out the printing cost and applies the 50% or 60% rate, and shows the minimum price KDP allows for that book.
How much do you earn per Kindle ebook sale?
On the 70% option you earn 70% of the list price without VAT, minus a delivery cost based on file size. On Amazon.com a 2 MB ebook at $4.99 earns 0.70 × ($4.99 − $0.30) = $3.28. On the 35% option the same book earns 0.35 × $4.99 = $1.75.
What price do I need for the 70% royalty?
On Amazon.com the list price must be between $2.99 and $12.99. KDP raised the top of this band from $9.99 to $12.99 on 7 July 2026, with matching changes in other marketplaces, such as £1.77 to £12.99 on Amazon.co.uk and €2.69 to €12.99 in the euro marketplaces.
What is the KDP delivery cost?
On the 70% option, KDP subtracts a delivery cost for each sale based on your file size: $0.15 per MB on Amazon.com, £0.10 per MB on Amazon.co.uk and €0.12 per MB in the euro marketplaces. The 35% option has no delivery cost, so image-heavy ebooks can sometimes earn more at 35%.
How are paperback royalties calculated?
Royalty = royalty rate × list price − printing cost. The rate is 60% when the list price is at or above a threshold ($9.99 on Amazon.com) and 50% below it. A 300-page black-ink paperback costs $1.00 + 300 × $0.012 = $4.60 to print on Amazon.com, so at $14.99 it earns 0.60 × $14.99 − $4.60 = $4.39.
Why does the calculator show a minimum paperback price?
KDP will not let you set a list price so low that your royalty cannot cover printing. The minimum is the printing cost divided by the royalty rate.
Is this the exact royalty I will be paid?
It is an estimate. Price matching, sales to buyers outside the 70% territories, currency conversion and tax withholding can all change the final amount. The pricing page in your KDP Bookshelf shows the exact figure for your book.
