How to resize an image for Instagram, step by step

Open the free Image Resizer at https://avaloncompany.ai/tools/image-resizer/. Add your photo or photos.

Pick an Instagram preset. The presets follow the sizes in the table on the tool page. They include the 4:5 portrait shape, which fills the most of the feed. When you pick a preset, the crop and pixel size are set for you.

Choose how to handle a photo with a different shape. Crop to fill trims the edges evenly from the center, so the image fills the frame with no borders. Fit whole image keeps everything and adds borders instead. The borders are white for JPG and transparent for PNG and WebP.

Download the results one by one, or press Download all. The downloaded images carry no watermark or logo.

If you want an exact width, choose Pixels and type only a width. Leave the height box empty. The other side follows each image's own proportions.

What we tested and how

We tested the tool on 2026-11-01 in Chromium (desktop), on the free tier. We ran 19 test cases. All 19 passed.

The cases cover three kinds of checks. One was a typical file. Seventeen were edge cases, such as other formats, damaged files, unusual file names and extreme sizes. Two were checks of the free batch limit.

The edge cases included BMP, an animated GIF, WebP, a CMYK JPEG, a 16-bit PNG, a transparent PNG, a 1 × 1 px image and an 8000 × 6000 px image. They also included a photo rotated by EXIF data, a cut-off (truncated) JPEG, and a 0-byte file. File name tests used a very long name, extra spaces with an emoji, and Korean and Japanese characters. The full list is in the results table on this page.

What happened with the difficult files

Most tricky files worked. The tool reported "Done: 1 resized." for the BMP, the animated GIF, the CMYK JPEG, the EXIF-rotated photo, the truncated JPEG, the 16-bit PNG, the 1 × 1 px image, the 8000 × 6000 px image and the transparent PNG. It also did so for WebP and for all three unusual file names. Outputs were JPG, PNG or WebP depending on the input. The BMP and the animated GIF came out as PNG. The WebP image came out as WebP.

Some files were refused, and the tool said why. For an iPhone HEIC photo it said: "1 file was skipped because it is not a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF image. For iPhone HEIC photos, convert them to JPG first with the image converter." Our free image converter is at /tools/image-converter/. Convert the photo there, then resize the JPG here.

A PDF renamed to look like an image, and an empty 0-byte image file, both gave the same message: "This file could not be read as an image. Try saving it as JPG or PNG first."

The tool also tells you when a size is bigger than your original. The image then has to be stretched and may look soft. For the sharpest result, start from a photo that is at least as large as the target size.

Limits of the free version and when this tool is not the right choice

The free version takes up to 30 images per batch. We tested exactly 30 files and got "30 images ready". With 31 files, the tool said: "Only 30 images fit in one batch, so 1 was left out. Resize these, press Clear, then add the rest."

The tool reads JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF files. It does not read HEIC directly, so convert those first. It also cannot open files that are not really images, or empty files.

Adding your own watermark is an optional Avalon Pro setting. It is off unless you turn it on.

Platform sizes change from time to time. The sizes come from each platform's own help and advertising pages, checked on the date shown in the table on the tool page. If a size looks off, check that date.

This tool is the wrong choice if your photo is in a format it cannot read and you cannot convert it first.

We re-run these tests when the tool changes. Results describe this tool on the date shown.
