Free Barcode Generator With Printable Label Sheets

Last updated By Avalon

Make EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8, ITF-14, Code 128 and Code 39 barcodes in seconds, with the check digit worked out for you.

Print it on a label sheet (PDF)

Fills one sheet with the barcode above, free. Print at 100% (actual size), not "fit to page". Start at label lets you reuse a sheet that already has some labels peeled off: labels are counted left to right, row by row.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Always scan a printed test with a phone or scanner before you print many labels. Barcodes are made in your browser.

What this tool does

It makes a barcode in seconds for a number or text you already have: EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8 and ITF-14 for retail products and cartons, Code 128 and Code 39 for your own stock, shelves and tickets. For the retail types it calculates or checks the last digit (the check digit) and tells you clearly what is wrong if a number does not add up. Download it as a PNG image or an SVG file, or as a printable PDF that fills a whole sheet of sticker labels. Free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

How to use it

  1. Choose the Barcode type.
  2. Type the number or text. For EAN, UPC and ITF-14 you can leave out the check digit and the tool adds it.
  3. Pick the Bar width, Bar height and colors, and whether to show the number under the bars.
  4. Press Download PNG or Download SVG, or choose your sheet under Print it on a label sheet and press Download label sheet PDF.
  5. Print one and scan it with a phone or scanner before you print many.

Tips for barcodes that scan

  • Keep dark bars on a light background. Red or pale bars often fail, because many scanners use red light.
  • Leave the white margins on both sides of the bars. They tell the scanner where the code starts.
  • Do not stretch the image unevenly. Resize it as a whole, or use the SVG.
  • For label sheets, print at actual size (100%) and test on plain paper first, held against the sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any number for a barcode on a product I sell in shops?

No. Retail barcodes (EAN-13, UPC-A, EAN-8 and ITF-14) carry a GS1 number that identifies your company and product. Shops and marketplaces check these numbers, so you need numbers licensed to you by GS1 (or given to you by the shop or marketplace for its own use). This tool does not create or sell numbers: it draws the barcode for a number you already have. Never copy a number from another product.

What is the check digit?

The last digit of an EAN, UPC or ITF-14 number is calculated from the other digits, so a scanner can tell when a digit was misread. Type the number without it and the tool adds it. Type the full number and the tool checks it and tells you which digit it expected if there is a typo.

Which barcode type do I need?

EAN-13 for products sold in shops in most of the world, UPC-A for shops in the United States and Canada, EAN-8 for very small packs, and ITF-14 for outer shipping cartons. For your own stock, shelves, tickets or asset tags, use Code 128 (letters, numbers and symbols) or Code 39 (capitals and numbers, read by almost every older scanner).

Can I make a book barcode from an ISBN?

Yes. A 13-digit ISBN starting with 978 or 979 is an EAN-13 number, so choose EAN-13 and type the ISBN without dashes. The small extra price barcode some books carry next to it is not included.

PNG or SVG?

SVG stays perfectly sharp at any size, so it is the best choice for packaging artwork, label software and print. PNG suits documents, spreadsheets and quick printing. For PNG, pick a larger bar width when you print big.

How big should I print a retail barcode?

The usual size for EAN-13 and UPC-A is about 37 × 26 mm (1.5 × 1 inch) including the white space around it. You can scale it down to about 80% or up to 200%. Do not cut the bar height or the white margins on the left and right, and keep the bars black or very dark on white.

Can I print barcodes on sticker label sheets for free?

Yes. Under Print it on a label sheet, pick your sheet (common US Letter and A4 sizes), and download a PDF with your barcode on every label. Start at label lets you use a sheet that is already partly used. Print at 100% (actual size).

Is there a watermark or a sign-up?

No. Barcodes and label sheets are free to download with no account and no watermark. They are made right in your browser, so they appear instantly.

What does Avalon Pro add?

A CSV list turned into up to 500 barcodes at once: one ZIP file of PNG or SVG images named from a column, or a label sheet PDF with a different barcode (and an optional product line) on every label. It also saves your settings as presets. Single barcodes and full sheets of one barcode stay free.
