Free Flatten PDF: Lock Form Fields, Comments and Stamps

Last updated By Avalon

Turn filled-in form fields, comments, stamps and signatures into a fixed part of the page, so the PDF looks the same everywhere and cannot be changed.

How to flatten

Free, no sign-up and no watermark. The PDF stays on your device: nothing is uploaded.

      What this tool does

To flatten a PDF for free, drop it above and press Flatten PDF: filled-in form fields, comments, stamps and signatures become a fixed part of the page, with no sign-up and nothing uploaded. Flatten a form before you send it so the answers cannot be changed, and so they show up in every reader, printer and upload portal.

      How to use it

      1. Drop your PDF into the box above, or click it to choose it.
      2. Under How to flatten, choose Forms, comments and stamps into the page (text stays searchable) or Every page into a picture (nothing can be selected or edited).
      3. For pictures, choose Standard for screens and email or Print for printing.
      4. Press Flatten PDF, then Download PDF.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I flatten a PDF for free?

Drop the PDF above, choose how to flatten and press Flatten PDF. You get a new PDF where the form fields, comments and stamps are part of the page, with no sign-up and no watermark.

What does flattening a PDF do?

It turns things that sit on top of the page, such as filled-in form fields, comments, stamps and pasted signatures, into part of the page itself. They then look the same in every reader and can no longer be edited, moved or deleted on their own.

Which way of flattening should I choose?

Forms, comments and stamps into the page keeps the text sharp and searchable and the file small, and is right for most filled-in forms. Every page into a picture also fixes the text itself, so nothing can be selected or edited, at the cost of a larger file.

Why does a printer or upload portal ask for a flattened PDF?

Form fields and comments are sometimes left out by printers, government portals and older readers. Once they are flattened into the page, what you see is what everyone else sees.

      Does flattening remove private information?

No. Flattening fixes what is visible, it does not remove anything. To remove names or numbers for good, use our free redact PDF tool.

      Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is flattened inside your browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers.

      Are there limits?

The free version flattens one PDF of up to 100 MB at a time, either way. Avalon Pro flattens up to 50 PDFs (500 MB) in one go and adds a ZIP download, saved presets and your own file names.
