Protect PDF with a Password: Free, No Upload

Last updated By Avalon

Add a password to a PDF for free.

Keep the password somewhere safe. Nobody, including us, can open the PDF without it.

Free, no sign-up and no watermark. The PDF and the password stay on your device: nothing is uploaded.

      What this tool does

It adds a password to a PDF. Anyone who opens the file has to type the password first, so you can email a contract, a payslip or a medical report as a PDF and send the password separately, by text message or phone. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.

      • AES-256 encryption, the strongest the PDF format supports
      • Runs in your browser: the file and the password are not uploaded
      • Everything else stays the same: pages, text, pictures, links and form fields

      How to use it

      1. Drop a PDF into the box above, or click it to choose one.
      2. Type a password, then type it again.
      3. Press Protect PDF, then Download PDF.

      Tips

      • Choose a long password. Three or four unrelated words are easier to remember and harder to guess than a short mix of symbols.
      • Send the password another way. If the PDF goes by email, share the password by text message or phone, not in the same email.
      • Need to remove a password later? Use the free unlock PDF tool. You will need the password.
      • Combining files first? Use the free merge PDF tool, then protect the merged PDF.
      • Need to sign it before sending? Use the free sign PDF tool first, then add the password.

      Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF password tool free?

Yes. Protect as many PDFs as you like, one at a time, up to 100 MB each. No sign-up, no email and no watermark.

      How strong is the protection?

The PDF is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest encryption the PDF format offers. Without the password, the pages cannot be opened or read. A long password (12 characters or more, or a few unrelated words) is much harder to guess than a short one.

      Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The encryption runs in your browser, so the file and the password stay on your device.

Will the PDF open on other devices?

Yes. Any common PDF reader asks for the password and then opens it: Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview on a Mac, Chrome, Edge, and the PDF viewers on iPhone and Android.

I forgot the password. Can you recover it?

No. Nobody can, including us: the password is never sent to us and good encryption cannot be reversed. Keep a copy of the original PDF or store the password in a password manager.

My PDF already has a password. Can I change it?

Remove the old password first with the free unlock PDF tool (you need to know it), then add the new one here.

      Are there limits?

One PDF at a time, up to 100 MB. Avalon Pro protects up to 50 PDFs at once with the same password (up to 500 MB in total) and saves them as one ZIP file.
