Unlock PDF: Remove a Password You Know, Free

Last updated By Avalon

Remove the password from a PDF when you know it, for free.

You need the password. This tool does not guess or crack passwords: it removes a password you already know, so you do not have to type it every time.

Free, no sign-up and no watermark. The PDF and the password stay on your device: nothing is uploaded.

      What this tool does

It removes the password from a PDF you can already open. Type the password once and you get a copy that opens without it, so you do not have to type it every time, and so you can merge, compress or edit the file with other tools. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.

You need the password. This tool cannot open a PDF whose password you do not know, and it does not try to guess one.

      How to use it

      1. Drop the password-protected PDF into the box above, or click it to choose one.
      2. Type the PDF's password.
      3. Press Unlock PDF, then Download PDF.

      What to expect

Wrong password? The file stays in the list with a message. Check the password (capital letters count) and press Unlock PDF again.

Not locked? If the PDF has no password and no restrictions, the tool says so and nothing changes.

      Frequently asked questions

Is this unlock PDF tool free?

Yes. Unlock as many PDFs as you like, one at a time, up to 100 MB each. No sign-up, no email and no watermark.

Can it open a PDF if I don't know the password?

No. This tool does not guess or crack passwords. You type the password you already know, and it saves a copy that opens without it. Bank statements, payslips and tax forms often come with a password you were told (for example your date of birth or part of an ID number); that is what this tool is for.

What about a PDF that opens but cannot be printed or copied?

Some PDFs open without a password but have a second, permissions password that blocks printing, copying or editing. If you know that password, type it here and the restrictions are removed too.

      Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. Unlocking runs in your browser, so the file and the password stay on your device.

      Does unlocking change the PDF?

Only the password and the restrictions are removed. Pages, text, pictures, links and form fields stay as they were.

      Which PDFs are supported?

PDFs protected with AES-256, AES-128 or the older RC4 encryption, which covers files made by Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office, Preview, banks and most other software.

      Are there limits?

One PDF at a time, up to 100 MB. Avalon Pro unlocks up to 50 PDFs at once with the same password (up to 500 MB in total), such as a year of monthly statements, and saves them as one ZIP file.
