Free Add Page Numbers to PDF: Position, Format and Start

Last updated By Avalon

Number the pages of a PDF at the top or bottom, as 1, Page 1 or Page 1 of 12, starting at any number.

Your files never leave your device. Everything is processed in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to a server.

        What this tool does

To add page numbers to a PDF for free, drop it above, pick where the numbers go and how they look, and press Save PDF: every page is numbered, with no sign-up and no watermark. You can put the numbers in any corner or the middle of the top or bottom edge, and choose between 1, Page 1, 1 / 12, Page 1 of 12 and - 1 -.

        How to use it

        1. Drop a PDF into the box above, or click it to choose one. A preview of every page appears.
        2. Under Page number settings, choose the Position, the Format, the number to Start at and the Size.
        3. Optionally turn, reorder or delete pages first: the numbers follow the final order.
        4. Press Save PDF, then Download.

        Tips

        • Combining several files? Merge them first with our free merge PDF tool, then number the merged PDF here so the numbers run straight through.
        • Numbering in the same step as a merge, split or reorder is part of Avalon Pro on those tools; numbering a finished PDF here is free.

        Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF for free?

Drop the PDF above, choose the position and the format under Page number settings, and press Save PDF. Every page gets its number, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Can I start numbering at a number other than 1?

Yes. Type the first number under Start at. This is handy when the PDF is chapter 2 of a longer report and should start at, say, 15.

Can I skip the cover page?

The numbers go on every page of the saved PDF. To leave the cover unnumbered, number the PDF without the cover (remove it with × first), then put the cover back in front with our free merge PDF tool.

Are the numbers upright on sideways pages?

Yes. On a page that is shown turned, the number is drawn turned the other way, so it reads upright where you see it.

        Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

No. The numbers are added inside your browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers.

Does it change anything else in my PDF?

No. The pages are copied as they are and only the numbers are added on top, so the text stays sharp and searchable.

        Are there limits?

The free version numbers one PDF of up to 100 MB at a time, with every position and format. Avalon Pro numbers up to 500 PDFs (500 MB) in one go and adds a ZIP download, saved presets and your own file names.
