What this tool does

To make a YouTube thumbnail for free with no watermark, pick a layout above, add your text and photo, and download a 1280 × 720 file that fits YouTube's upload limit, with no sign-up. It builds a YouTube thumbnail from layers: a background (solid color, gradient, two-color split or your own picture), up to 3 blocks of bold text, up to 2 pictures such as a cutout of your face or a product, and arrows, circles, color boxes and frames. You can drag everything on the canvas, resize it with the corner handle, and line it up with snapping guides. Previews below the editor show the thumbnail at about the sizes viewers see on the home feed, in search, in the Up next sidebar and on a phone, with a sample time stamp in the corner.

YouTube Help also says you can upload your own thumbnail only if your account is verified. If the upload button is missing in YouTube Studio, verify your account first.

How to use it

  1. Pick a layout under Templates, or start from the one already on the canvas.
  2. Under Background, choose a color, a gradient, a split or your own picture. For a picture, use the zoom, move and darken sliders so the text stays readable.
  3. Under Text and layers, click a text to edit it: the words, font, size, color, outline, a color box behind it, drop shadow and tilt.
  4. Press Add cutout or picture to place your face or product, then give it a sticker outline if it needs to stand out.
  5. Drag things into place. Guides appear when a layer lines up with the center or another layer.
  6. Check the previews, especially the smallest one, then choose the size, format and file size limit and press Download thumbnail.

Tips for a thumbnail people can read

  • Check the smallest preview. In the Up next sidebar a thumbnail is only about 168 pixels wide. If you cannot read the words there, use fewer words or a bigger size.
  • Keep the text short. A few large words read faster than a sentence. The title already sits right under the thumbnail, so the thumbnail does not need to repeat it.
  • Use contrast. Light text on a dark background, or the other way round. An outline, a drop shadow or a color box helps when the background is busy.
  • Keep the bottom-right corner free. The time stamp covers it on every thumbnail.
  • Follow the rules. YouTube Help says thumbnails must follow the Community Guidelines. A thumbnail that breaks them can be removed, and you can lose custom thumbnails for a while.
  • Only use pictures you have the right to use, such as your own photos and screenshots.

Testing more than one thumbnail

YouTube Studio has a feature called Test & compare: on a computer, you upload up to 3 thumbnails for one video and YouTube shows them to viewers and reports which one earned the most watch time (YouTube Help, "Test & compare thumbnails"). It does not work on videos made for kids, private videos or videos for mature audiences. With Avalon Pro, this tool lets you design up to three variants, look at them side by side in a mock feed, and download all of them in one ZIP file, ready to upload.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a thumbnail under 2 MB for the YouTube app?

Choose 2 MB under File size limit and download as JPG. The tool lowers the JPG quality step by step until the file fits and shows you the final size.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube Help asks for 3840 × 2160 pixels for regular videos, at least 640 pixels wide, in a 16:9 shape, as a JPG or PNG. This tool saves at 3840 × 2160 or at 1280 × 720, which is also 16:9 and well above the minimum width.

What is the file size limit?

YouTube Help lists 2 MB when you upload a video thumbnail from the phone app and 50 MB from a computer. Choose the limit you need under File size limit. For JPG, the tool lowers the quality step by step until the file fits and shows you the final size.

Are my pictures uploaded anywhere?

No. The thumbnail is drawn inside your browser, on your own device. Your photos and cutouts are not sent to our servers or anyone else.

Is there a watermark?

No. The file you download contains only your design.

Why does the bottom-right corner look shaded?

That is where YouTube shows the video length on top of your thumbnail. Keep faces, numbers and words out of that corner so the time stamp does not cover them. You can hide the shading with Show the time stamp area.

How do I put my face on the thumbnail without the background?

Add a picture that already has a transparent background (a PNG or WebP cutout). You can then give it a white or colored sticker outline and a drop shadow so it stands out from the background.

Can I write in other languages?

The display fonts cover English and most European languages. For Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and other scripts, choose Device bold as the font so every character shows in your device's own bold font.

What does Avalon Pro add?

A/B variants (design up to 3 versions, compare them side by side in a mock feed, and download them all as one ZIP file) and saved designs you can reuse for every video. Everything else on this page is free.
